On December 12, 2009 we held a
Night of Honor for Coach Maiorana.
We had attendance of
over 300 people from all walks of life with Coach Maiorana.
What a great night it was. It was great to see many old friends catching up
on old times, sharing stories and memories of how Coach impacted their lives
all the while making new friends with that common bond. Dinner was provided
by Guadalajara and the Torres Family. People continued to volunteer as they
entered the door for the night. Everyone wanted to give back, for all the
gifts they had received from Coach Maiorana through the years, most thought
it was a simple form of repayment.
One of the highlights of the evening was when Coach Maiorana entered the
party with many members of his family. All 300+ guests stood and applauded
to begin their tribute and thanks to a great Mentor, Teacher, Educator and
Coach. Players from all years he coached were in attendance, each spending a
moment to honor Coach with a shared story of thanks for everything he has
meant to them. Several coaches and colleagues shared a moment of thanks with
Coach M. and his family. Coach M. took the mic briefly and thanked his
players, his family, his colleagues and friends for the night. The support
and prayers he has received over the last few weeks. Frank Maiorana took the
stage next and gave a touching speech on how Coach was going to fight this
battle, just how he taught his players and others how to never give up.
Frank introduced the Maiorana family in attendance: Charlie's mother, his
sisters, their children, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law and all the
Maiorana’s in attendance. He spoke about the family and their never ending
support for Coach in his toughest battle He wanted everyone to know that the
Maiorana family was “doing fine” because they believe that Coach will win
this battle with cancer.
We presented Coach Maiorana with a proclamation from Mayor of Houston, Bill
White, who declared December 12, 2009, Coach Charlie Maiorana Day. The
auction began shortly after and provided plenty of heavy bidding and some
great competition. We owe a big thank you to Chris Snyder, Raynor Noble and
Roger Clemens. They were very gracious with their time and support during
the auction and long after. These players stayed for pictures, autographs
and showed their appreciation for Coach Maiorana. As the formal activities
began to wind down, the band, Checkered Past, cranked up. Many old friends
hit the dance floor and spent hours catching up.
On behalf of all the volunteers and the organizing Team, we would like to
thank everyone for your thoughts, prayers, kind words and participation in
the great event.
